Impacts Solar has won The Australian Innovation Challenge for its Solar Desalination and Power Plant design. The awards, supported by The Australian newspaper, Shell and the Department of Industry, acknowledge and promote Australian innovations that have the power to transform people’s health, prosperity and environment.
Trevor Powell, CEO of Impacts Solar attended the awards ceremony in Canberra, accepting the award from The Hon. Ian MacFarlane MP, Minister for Industry. Impacts Solar was excited to stand alongside 7 fellow award-winners on the night from some of Australia’s leading Australian universities, research institutes and businesses.
The award acknowledges the enormous potential for Impacts’ Solar Desalination and Power Plant design to contribute to our future energy, water and food security. The proposed design combines two new Australian technologies to turn saltwater into potable water and green electricity using the sun’s heat – cutting carbon emissions. The proposal is the result of a partnership between Impacts Solar, the University of Western Australia (UWA) and the National Centre of Excellence in Desalination Australia (NCEDA).
The solar thermal desalination technology is designed to replace energy-intensive, fossil fuel-powered reverse osmosis desalination. By combining Impacts’ medium-temperature solar thermal collector with the UWA and NCEDA’s highly efficient Multiple-Effect Distillation (MED) system, the team will be able to provide an economically and environmentally sustainable model for water treatment and power production. The new technology has potential for the treatment of water produced from the burgeoning Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry, enabling the beneficial reuse of CSG-produced water for agricultural and industrial purposes and supporting sustainable water balances in those ecosystems.
